ON Parcel Tax Measure ES
It's a City Tax disguised as a Tax for the Schools
We support our public schools but this measure does not increase school funding
The City Benefits, Not the Schools
- School funding will not increase.
- The City gets $12 million by you paying the City's decades-
  long commitment to the schools
- There are no restrictions on how the City can spend this,    even $650,000 for a Rose Parade Float
- Malibu schools benefit without paying their fair share.
Threats of cuts to teachers is fearmongering
- If this doesn't pass, the City could continue the funding
- Why would only teachers be cut when they are 39% of staff
- 60 teachers weren't hired when they started getting $10 million more from Measure GS 3 years ago
- The District averaged a $13 million surplus the last 5 years
It affects affordability
- It's $495 per year that increases every year, FOREVER
- It's a regressive tax that disproportionately impacts our most vulnerable neighbors
- Renters are affected; they can pay up to $420/year in school taxes
- This is in addition to an existing $530 parcel tax and school bond payments that increased by 58% last year, for a total of $6.05/day, $2200/year for a $1 million condo for the District
City services would not need to be cut
- Why would services need to be cut if the City doesn't get EXTRA money?
- The City announced a $9 million surplus, despite declaring fiscal distress and projecting an $11 million deficit
- The City is getting $13.5 million in new revenue from increased fees that residents are paying from the realignment plan

FAQ
What is the ballot measure?
A new parcel tax of $495 per year, increasing every year, FOREVER
Why is it a bad idea?
The measure reads like it's for our schools but by replacing the City payment to the schools, the City gets the $12 million, with no restrictions on how it's spent
What is our stance?
We are against this additional tax that affects the affordability of living in Santa Monica . The Schools don't get more money, the City gets an extra $12 million to spend on whatever they want.
